Description

A B2-level ESL lesson on Technological Advancements and Innovations

Students explore technology-related vocabulary through engaging tasks that highlight innovation, gadgets, and modern developments. This B2 technology vocabulary lesson includes a lead-in discussion, guided vocabulary practice, and opinion-based speaking activities. Learners identify and use key terms like artificial intelligence and cybersecurity in context, reflect on personal tech habits, and evaluate the societal impact of innovations. Ideal for vocabulary building and stimulating conversation about the digital age.

Warmer: Everyday Technology

The lesson starts with students thinking about a gadget or technology that they use daily, like a mobile phone or AI such as the infamous ChatGPT. Next, discuss whether students could live without this piece of technology. Allow everyone to express their opinions and see how many people share their thoughts about the devices they can’t imagine living without.

Vocabulary: Talking About Technology

First, introduce the vocabulary by providing six words and six statements about the technology. Have students read the statements and fill in the gaps with the missing words. This time, the words are artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, gadget, hardware, innovation, and software. As you can see, this time the vocabulary isn’t too complicated. This should allow students to focus on the context and the way these words work in sentences.

Speaking Practice: Agree or Disagree

The idea behind bite-sized lessons is to provide short revisions while allowing plenty of space for conversation. For this reason, ask students to take a closer look at the statements they have just completed and discuss whether they agree or disagree with them in pairs or small groups. Listen to each pair and provide general speaking feedback at the end of the activity.

Discussion Task: Biggest Innovation

The final activity begins with a whole-group discussion. Students brainstorm the six most exciting technological advancements and innovations ever. If you think this topic is too broad, you can narrow it down to technological advancements and innovations from the 21st century as it can also lead to an interesting conversation. Note down all the ideas and divide the students into pairs or small groups. Ask them to discuss which of the six innovations has had the biggest impact on society. Conclude the task by having different groups share their answers and explanations.
